Five Thoughts

Trying on a new blog idea whilst the (cough) other writing escalates:

For years I sifted through a myriad of current topics and other assorted cranial minutia to bring what I deemed the most worthy to front.  This practice will continue, although less frequently.  Unfortunately (of fortuitously for some topics) a vast amount of musings became lost in the fray.  No more!  I bring you a new section called…  Okayit’s already titled above, so here they are:

  1. Should Dennis Rodman’s passport be pulled?  No way!  Here’s why:
Remember my maxim from a few years ago?  “You are only as good as those surrounding”?  While it’s true I think Rodman’s the current Embarrassor to the United States, I think he and his entourage are precisely where they belong.  Now if only they’d stay and invite pretty much every reality TV “star” to join them.
  2. Make it Simple, Stupid!
Progressive taxes vs. Flat Tax:  Astounding spin from our elected officials.  I mean, the words “progressive” and “flat” supposedly entail two entirely different modes of collection.  Progressive utilizes a changing percentage based on one’s income, whereas Flat uses a fixed percentage for everyone.  Basic in theory, but in practice, a flat tax percentage is progressive to one’s income.  Rich folks pay more, poor pay less.  Make a lot, pay a lot.  Make nothing, pay nothing.  Doesn’t that make more sense than our completely convoluted IRS industry? If proponents ever want the Flat Tax passed, they should rename it the “Simple Tax”.  Hey, it almost worked for the Fair Tax!
  3. Great Hillary’s PR Machine
Did anyone else notice the polar shelf break a while back when Bill Clinton criticized Obama’s handling of the Affordable Care Act?  Now former Defense Secretary Robert Gate’s book reportedly criticizing everyone but Mrs. Clinton.  Watch ABC News sometime.  The love flows almost as strong there as it does for the British monarchy, and both have become quite obvious.  Before you think me a liberal media fan, I’ve no endearment for any of our national networks and their warm yellow rain.
  4. Return of the Seminoles
Brilliant second-half comeback by Florida State, and the return of a great football dynasty.  No, they’re not my alma mater, but I’m a longtime fan.  Derrick Brooks, Warrick Dunn and Deion Sanders, anyone?  Dadgum it!  Hat’s off to Auburn as well.  I thought you a fluke after the UGA game, but you owned the first half in convincing style.  No shame, War Eagles.
  5. The Sound of The Sound
Read an article the other day from someone (can’t remember) lamenting the downward spiral of modern recording’s fidelity.  They said something like “..went from records to tapes to CDs to MP3s and other low-fi streaming”.  We slowly transitioned from warm, meaningful recordings (art) to homogenized, industrialized porridge…Without delving into a novel-length diatribe, I mostly agree.  Not only has popular music become endless computer-generated formulaic derivativeswith sporadic exceptionlittle attention has been given to sonic greatness or invention.  Sure, there are “lossless” file types, and most studios use digital settings that closely mimic analog (others going further and still use 2″ tape!), but the point is the end user.  Largely, this means kids and their phones, streaming highly compressed music.  Where are we headed?Me?  I may be int he market for a nice McIntosh 4100 and pair of JBL 4312s soon.More
